What's in a name?
Why did we choose "Renegade" Martial Arts?
When we chose the name for our academy we wanted something that highlighted who we are in an instant. We wanted something that communicated our values, approach and ethos. Renegade Martial Arts fitted our needs perfectly.
The word renegade is one of those lovely words in the English language which can be used as a noun, an adjective or a verb. The surface definition across the board however is a bit negative. A renegade is a person who deserts or betrays an organisation or set of principles.
A renegade is someone who has wilfully and treacherously changed their allegiance. As martial artists we are guided by a common morality and set of values. Whilst the specific words may differ, courtesy, self discipline, respect and integrity are common values to all martial arts. So why did we choose a name which could suggest that we had betrayed these values?
For us Renegade provides a more positive meaning. For us it represents that we have stepped beyond the confines that many martial arts and martial artists are trapped in.
We recognise the strength and values of traditional martial arts. Our academy is established on the central tenets of Tae Kwon Do; courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit. We understand the importance of ensuring that the roots of our martial arts education are strong for both the present and the future.
We also understand that a blinkered view of the martial arts unquestionably limits the development of the individual. Martial arts an opportunity are individualistic expression, put aside the questions of function and we have a form of physical expression as is found in any artistic endeavour. We know that through individual expression we can learn and understand more about ourselves and the fundamental unity between body, mind and spirit.
We also recognise that blind devotion to a singular way will not result in the development of a realistic, functional knowledge of martial arts. We chose renegade to highlight that we openly embrace all styles, all aspects of martial arts. We retain our roots to allow us to evolve and grow to accept, investigate and include new techniques, ideas and methods in our syllabuses. The name renegade to us means that we have moved away from a traditional martial arts mentality, towards a holistic and eclectic view which can ensure the longevity of our martial arts education.
Renegade also emphasises the idea that we are more than just a martial arts academy or a gym. Renegade provides the idea that we have moved beyond the traditional, solely delivering martial arts classes. Renegade represents is a synergy between effective fitness coaching and specialised martial arts education.
Renegade provides an opportunity for all ages to benefit from these opportunities to improve their physical and psychological health and wellbeing. We also chose this name to highlight the individualistic approach we take to fitness coaching. Renegade exists to offer each person opportunity to attain their individual goals and results. Renegade recognises that the traditional approach to health and fitness is too generalised and one size does not fit all. In this way we chose renegade to emphasise that we had evolved beyond the confines of a traditional gym and our bespoke, unique and original programmes are a truly different and more effective approach.
